Following on from last year and he Feva Grand Prix in October this winter sees the continuation of our successful  winter race-training programme. It’s a perfect opportunity for juniors to hone their racing skills, or, if newer to race training, to have the opportunity to learn more about racing, and crew for more experienced sailors.

Mike Way has agreed to be lead coach for the winter training with help various other coaches in the club, who are developing and running the new programme for the winter training.

If you are wondering if you, or someone in your family, is experienced enough to come along to these sessions, the following can be used as a guide for what we’re looking for in anyone coming along to join in:

  • If keen to helm, should have some experience of race training or racing.
  • If wanting to crew, should be able to sail a triangle course happily in light and stronger winds. Ideally should have RYA stage 4 , or similar experience.
  • Must have decent wetsuit, hat, gloves, boots, spray-jacket, buoyancy aid and layers! (please do contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with any queries about suitable clothing prior to the first session)
  • Must be keen to learn new skills, refresh old skills, and be happy to sail in potentially colder and windier weather.

The programme will cover on-water skills of boat handling,
start technique and tactics,
upwind and downwind strategy,
mark rounding and
tactics for rules. It will also cover off-water topics (over lunch, or on days with unfavourable weather)
such as rules,
boat set-up, looking after your boat,
weather, and tide related tactics. There should also be time for a session of
trouble-shooting and tuning.

There will also be races held at each session, which will count towards an overall Exe-Squad series, with prizes awarded.

We always can do with extra help on and off the water from parents, so if any parents can make themselves available for some of the sessions, either by coming out in the safety boats, or by helping on the beach, they would be warmly welcomed!

We just want to encourage anyone who is keen and able, to join in with this opportunity – it’s great fun, and very rewarding sailing through the winter. Do get in touch with any queries you might have!
