RYA Stage 1 and 2 Youth Sailing Scheme
AIM
The complete beginners courses, aimed at getting juniors sailing with assistance. The Stage 1 will enable them to crew efficiently and sail and tack the boat across the wind competently. The Stage 2 will enable then to helm all points of sail competently.
DURATION
Stage 1 or Stage 2 can be complete in a 2 day course (a minimum of 16 hours) run over a weekend or school holidays
OR
Stage 1 and Stage 2 can both be completed as part of a summer week course.This completion of both stages depends on the ability and weather conditions during the Summer Week.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
None
MINIMUM AGE
Minimum age: 8yrs
COST
Stage 1 or 2, day sessions, £60 Members, £90 non-members (per day)
Summer Week: £250 Members, £300 non-members

Logbook (provided at Stage 1 only)
Certificate on successful completion of course
YOU NEED TO BRING
- Sailing gear to include
- Wetsuit
- Buoyancy aid for competent swimmers (minimum 50 Newtons)
- Life jackets (foam) to be worn by non swimmers (minimum 100 Newtons)
- Footwear (Grippy shoes that can get wet. Wetsuit boots or shoes, or trainers are fine, Plimsoles, Crocs or Wellies not ok)
- Swim gear and/or rash vest for under the wetsuit
- Waterproof jacket or spray top
- Towel
- Sun protection including suncream/sun hat
- Warm hat for colder days
- Lunch including Waterbottle
- Logbook (Stage 2 – can be purchased from the club)

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
Parents are not required to stay throughout the course, however are to provide a number they can be contacted on if needed during the day.
Courses held at Exe Sailing Club with a minimum duration of 16 hours, with a maximum ratio of, 1 instructor to 3 students in double hander, or 1 instructor to 6 students in single handers.
