Cruisers
Exe Sailing Club members cruise the world but more often the English Channel and the ports of Devon and Cornwall. By its very nature cruising is a ‘get away from it all’ activity but members meet regularly in distant ports by arrangement or good fortune. Skippers frequently require crew to accompany them. Yachts range in size from small day sailors up to around 40 feet.
As an RYA registered training centre we offer a variety of cruiser related courses – both practical and shore based. More details on specific courses can be found under Training.
The club actively encourages women and girls to participate in sailing activities through the Girls Go Sailing group. More information can be found under Girls Go Sailing.
Cruiser racing is very popular and during the summer takes place on most Tuesday and Thursday evenings out to sea. All types and sizes of cruiser take part, handicapping is performed using the RYA YTC system.
The Club’s annual ‘Wine Run’, usually held in June, is a popular event. Crews return with tales to tell and their wine purchases for the associated Wine Tasting Competition. Ports visited in recent years include Cherbourg, St. Vaast la Hougue, Carteret and Treguier.
We also have a number of weekend cruises and races, concluding with our season finale, the River Exe Champagne Challenge coastal race, usually to Brixham, organised by Exe Sailing Club. It attracts most of the Club fleet and visitors from other local clubs.
