Get Racing

Get Racing

To support those who are new to racing at Exe Sailing Club we can offer help to get you on the water safely and confidently.

This will give you the opportunity to understand how things work during racing and specific information about the conditions on the Exe. We also like to offer a buddy who can help you on race day.

We have a varied sailing programme, which includes races on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout the main sailing season. On Saturday mornings there is a separate Bronze Fleet/Junior Fleet start to encourage those new to racing on the Exe.

New members (helms or crews) who would like to know more, should email Andy on GetRacing@exe-sailing-club.org and he will discuss the best way for you to get the support you are looking for. He will be happy to meet you in person or have a telephone conversation, both prior to a race and on the actual race day, to discuss the practicalities you may find helpful to consider before you set off.

In summary you can choose how much help you need, however we like to offer the following:

  • A point of contact for those who have raced before in other clubs or want to get back into racing
  • A telephone/face to face meeting to answer any initial questions
  • Explanation of our procedures, start sequence etc
  • Summary of the River Exe, what to look out for.
  • Race Areas
  • Introduce you to a buddy, where possible someone with a similar dinghy

We can offer support for the first couple of races:

  • Introduction to the Fleet Captains
  • When to launch
  • Help with trolleys
  • How to get to the start line and how to get back from the race
  • Pre/Post race debrief/chat if wanted

Bronze Fleet / Junior Fleet starts

Number 2 PennantNumber 2 Pennant

As part of Get Racing we want to encourage as many people who enjoy sailing to get involved in all of our racing events. To help and support those who would like to try racing we are implementing a Bronze / Junior Fleet start for Saturday Series, signified by Number 2 pennant see right:

The start sequence is defined in the SIs and NoRs.
Saturday racing will start at 10am with Bronze / Junior Fleet, which will be followed by the Handicap fleet 5 minutes after. Your start & finish time will be corrected and recorded on the Saturday handicap results page.
To ensure the Race Officer is aware of those wishing to participate in a Bronze / Junior Fleet start, you will need to tie a yellow ribbon on the end of your boom. Ribbons available in a plastic sleeve on the club information board.

Club Boats

If you want to get racing, but do not have a boat, you can use the club training boats free of charge, for racing. You can use the clubs double handed RS Quests, RS Feva or the single handed RS Zests, RS Tera, Toppers or Lasers. If you wish to book a club boat please visit club website

There is already a lot of information available to you on the Exe SC website. Read the Dinghy Racing page and follow the links which will provide you with information to help you further.

For those of you who want to sail but racing is not for you, we also have a dinghy cruising programme, which provides an opportunity to sail in company with others.

Member Improver Sessions

For those who want to get out on the water, Member Improver Sessions run regularly throughout the year, these sessions can be found on the club calendar and can be booked at Member Improver Sessions. This is another great way to get on the water to help develop your skills.
