Dinghy Racing
Dinghy racing at Exe SC is great fun, held both in the estuary and at sea. We particularly welcome those sailors new to racing, or new to racing at Exe SC, and suggest that they read A beginners Guide to Racing at Exe SC and Get Racing . We race at weekends from April to December according to the tides and on Wednesday evenings during the summer. Committee boat starts/finishes are used in the estuary and at sea. In the estuary the start/finish may be based on the club race box, near the entrance to the Marina, using pre-set courses detailed on the course card. See the club calendar for the racing programme and the Notice Board for the Notice of Race, Entry Forms, Sailing Instructions and course card.
Racing is run as a PY handicap fleet, although the Comet Trios have a class start on Wednesday evenings. The most popular dinghies are those that best suit the conditions in the estuary, notably the double handed Comet Trio , RS200 and RS400 and the single handed RSAero and Supernova . Each of these classes has a class page containing details of the dinghy, fleet activity and Fleet Captain.
Results are posted on the website as they become available.
Racing at Exe SC is great fun but does have particular challenges associated with the currents generated by the tides and the layout of our racing areas. If you would like help with understanding the tidal flows then look at Tidal Flows in the Exe Estuary and Tidal Flows in Lyme Bay .
For ideas on how to use your time productively before the start then read Ben Cornish’s First Beat Tips .
Whilst the Juniors are very welcome in the club handicap fleets they also have their own race series on Thursday evenings.
Races are run by volunteers who each offer their services several times during the year. Information on running races is found on the Race Team Information page, please contact the Sailing Secretary if you would like to become involved. Details of duties are on the Duty Roster .
